  • Well, what exactly do we mean when we say self-esteem? Sound kinda tough huh! As if you have heard that before but you seem not so well- versed with it. So, here’s the definition.”

le5.jpg

  • Ooops! We have discussed self-concept last time, hope you didn’t forget. As you can see Self C, is very much related to Self E! Another thing, check this out!

le4.jpg

  •  “There’s also another one that you can consider:
S.E. - It is not just how poorly or how well we do things (self-concept) but the importance or value we place on what we do well or poorly.

FILTERING MESSAGES

-Self perceptions can become

increasingly distorted

- even though we hear messages accurately,

we do not listen to or perceive them equally

*So, you now know how we can make assessments concerning our self-concept and self-esteem. Now, let's try to consider if these will last a lifetime.....

CHANGING SELF-CONCEPTS AND SELF-ESTEEM

                             basis

- Self- concept > ---------> self-fulfilling prophecies

                             basis

Self- esteem > ----------> filter we use for other's comments

                                                                       l----------------> will get past the

                                                                                          filter and can begin

                                                                                           to change self

                                                                                           -concept

                                                                                    ___________________

                                                                                     newly changed self-

                                                                                     perceptions

               begin to                          newly self-created

               filter other     basis          self-fulfilling

----------->  concepts ------------------>   prophecies

PRESENTING OURSELVES

                               presented

Self-image/ esteem -------------------> various roles we enact

ROLE- pattern of learned behaviors that people use to meet the perceived demands of a particular context

            - it may result from our own needs, relationships that we form, cultural expectations that are held for us, the groups we choose to be a part of and our own conscious decisions

WORKING SELF CONCEPT-  used to denote the specific aspects of one's identity that are activated by the rolw one is enacting at a particular time

*Diversity of the roles we enact helps us to withstand stressful situations

SELF CONCEPT, SELF-ESTEEM and COMMUNICATION

1. Our self-perceptions moderate competing internal messages.

le1.jpg

2. Our self-perception influences how we talk about ourselves with others

If we feel good about ourselves -----> communicating positively

negatively about ourselves -------> communicating negatively

                                                                       by downplaying our roles

CULTURAL and GENDER DIFFERENCES

Culture- influences perception and affects people's views of self

Western view of self- autonomous entity with distinct

                                     abilities, traits, motives and values

                                  - individual as the most basic social unit

                                  - self E and self C- built on the idea of

independence from others and the value of

                                    expressing and discovering individual

                                    uniqueness

Eastern view of self- goal of human life is to maintain

                                    interdependence among individuals

* Different culture, different ways, different manners of creating self-esteem and self concept

Gender

- Men and women are socialized to view themselves differently and to value who they are based on whether their behavior corresponds to what is expected of their sex.

Self Concepts which can be classified as "gender appropriate",- the more likely the person is to have a rich self concept and high self-esteem.

PERCEPTION OF OTHERS

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS and SOCIAL BEHAVIORS

FIRST IMPRESSION: based on Physical Characteristics that can help others to categorize

ex. People assessed in a recent study that professional women dressed in jackets as more powerful than professional women dressed in other clothing.

------> may also be based on a person's social behavior

"Whoaaa! I think I have given you enough already! It's your turn now to give descriptions and examples (as briefly as you can) to the following items:

1. Halo effect

2. Strereotyping

3. Emotional States

4. Cultural and Gender Differences

5. Improving Social Perceptions
